My work created during the Shape virtual residency reflects a process of internal questioning and reframing of my relationship with my late uncle. We were very close despite his absence while living in Hong Kong for many years. I inherited my car from him as well as most of the furniture I’ve been surrounded by while sheltering in place these past seven months. During a long drive, I began to make recordings of a running monologue which I spoke out loud to myself. I reflected on what I knew of him and the questions I would ask him now if I were able. In a way I began to reimagine our relationship and question how I could further understand him posthumously. Car Talk is the first piece I have made in response to this process and the first time I have incorporated text into my work. This piece is unfinished much like my reflection and recordings. The stoneware has been bisque fired, but due to the slow down of my ceramic studio, I have been unable to send it through a final glaze firing.
